Depeche Mode 'MODE' is a limited-edition collection of the band's work to date housed in a minimalist black cube. Includes all 14 studio albums plus additional non-album material - from 2017's Spirit back to the debut album Speak & Spell. The albums' original covers have been re-interpreted in uniform black-on-black designs exclusive to this box set.

"For "MODE", I pulled the 2006/7 UK DDP files (they are the files that make CDs) for discs 1-14. For Playing The Angel, though, that is just the stock 2005 CD (as there is no remaster). For discs 15-18, I made sure all the tracks were the right versions, supplying masters from the vault and a few from my personal DAT collection (with appropriate fades, and such).
In a cool "full circle" moment, some DATs that I acquired from Warners back when I was just a contracted editor/remixer for them, now sometimes come into play as source material. My UK test DAT of "Dangerous", for example, sounded better than the US and UK vault copies (less digital dropouts and glitching).
As with everything I have done so far for these audio releases, my extent of touching files is to apply fades (gain envelopes), remove any hum (only done that two or three times), and do minor re-editing. For example, instead of using the finished "Quad: Final Mix" tape for Enjoy The Silence, I went back to the original four master parts of the mix, and recreated the full mix from better sources. By doing that, I saved a bit of hiss and noise, and yielded a better sounding mix. I constantly compared the edit I did to the original 12" single (needle dropped, and placed in Pro Tools as a guide). It passed.
As there may be some confusion on this, I am not applying any compression, EQ, or other such things. Fades, editing and some gentle denoise (hum) is all I am doing, to hi-resolution flat transfers. Battery (Sony's production house) is doing any additional compression, EQ and other things. I then listen to see if it passes the test or not. To be honest, there hasn't been a need for much in the way of compression or EQ for the vinyl. Battery is really just making all the tracks on a record have "even playback levels and dynamics". The original tapes sound damn good as-is.
As far as I am aware, the 2005 DDP for Playing The Angel was used as-is. No additional touching was done."
